HP's Small Laptop for School Children

One more of the world's biggest technology companies is clamoring to enter the growing market for pint-sized computers targeted mainly for pint-sized customers.

Hewlett-Packard Co., the No. 1 seller of personal computers worldwide, said Tuesday it's throwing its weight behind a new class of miniaturized laptops, a fledgling market already populated with products from Intel Corp., the world's largest semiconductor company, and Asustek Computers Inc., the world's largest maker of computer motherboards.

The machines are so new the industry hasn't settled on a name for low-cost and scaled-down laptops used primarily for surfing the Internet and performing other basic functions like word processing.

Intel has labeled them "netbooks," and it expects more than 50 million netbooks to be in circulation by 2011.

HP executives say their new machines, which go on sale later this month, are an important piece of the Palo Alto-based company's effort to build market share in schools, where machines had to be smaller and cheaper without losing too many functions.

The companies also expect adults to cotton to the idea of buying two laptops - a lightweight one just for Web browsing on the go and the full-power machine for the home or office. But industry executives acknowledge that the market is untested and that no one knows what demand will be once the machines are deployed widely.

HP's foray comes in the form of a new computer called a "Mini-Note" that weighs less than 3 pounds with a screen that measures 8.9 inches diagonally. The machines start at under $500 for a Linux-based model. Prices go up for Windows Vista models with faster processors.

The processors HP is using are made by Via Technologies Inc., the distant third-ranked player in the microprocessor space, and come in clock speeds up to 1.6 gigahertz. The inclusion is a big win for Via, which trails Intel and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. by a wide margin in the microprocessor market.

HP executives say the only major feature its Mini-Note lacks is an optical drive for ingesting DVDs and CD-ROMs, which can be bought separately. But they say many schools requested the drives be left out to prevent students from playing unauthorized games.

The Mini-Note will compete primarily with Intel's Classmate PCs - which are designed by Intel and feature Intel chips but are built and branded by other companies - and Asustek's Eee PC.

To a lesser extent, they also will go up against the XO laptop from the Cambridge, Mass., nonprofit One Laptop per Child, which is intended primarily for schoolchildren in developing countries.

Intel says it has sold "tens of thousands" of Classmate PCs since they went on sale last year. And OLPC says it has sold hundreds of thousands of the XO. Figures were not immediately available for sales of the Eee.

Acer Ferrari 1100

Over a year ago we had reviewed the Acer Ferrari 1002 WTMi but we weren't too impressed with the laptop. Though it was lightweight and had a pleasing design, it scored below par on system performance and battery life. Recently Acer updated this model, promising better performance and significantly enhanced battery life. Does it live up to the promise? Let’s find out.

Like its predecessors, the Ferrari 1100 has retained its trademark Ferrari design. It still has the same basic black color and design as the 1002, but the red stripes are missing. The lid retains the famous Ferrari logo (the prancing stallion) and apart from this icon, there is nothing to indicate that this is a Ferrari co-sponsored product. Acer would be advised to borrow a leaf out of the book of Asus, whose Lamborghini products have the same consistent styling as the powerful sports cars the brand is supposed to embody.
Another thing we noticed was that for a 12.1 inch laptop, the 1100 is rather heavy. It weighs in at 4.4 pounds (1.9 kilos) – a good half-kilo more than the 1002. This can be attributed to the thick plastic the laptop is liberally clad with. There is an upside to this: compared to the 1002, it feels a lot more sturdy. The 1100 is not only noticeably larger but also feels more secure and comfortable. It will certainly weather the elements a lot better. Oddly, while the area around the LCD panel is a shiny black almost-ghetto mirror finish, the keyboard area is a dull and ugly matte finish. This weird contrast and lack of color could put some people off.

Lenovo 3000 Y510

Lenovo has, over the past couple of years, focused on promoting its Y-range of products as multimedia powerhouses that also boast of good performance. By and large this tactic has worked well for the company. Does the recently introduced Y510 break the mold, or does it offer more of the same? Read on to find out.

Design and Features
The Y510, in a departure from previous models in this range, has a sober all-black finish. The lid has a beautiful matte finish, with grids reminiscent of expensive wallpaper paneling. The area around the keyboard has a smoothly diffused lead-colored finish that looks very classy. The LCD panel, however, is a bit of a disappointment, as it has a highly reflective surface and causes all kind of viewing problems.

Physically, the laptop is similar to other previous Lenovo models. Its profile is similar to that of a body-builder, so weight-wise it could do with a bit of slimming down. However, like most Lenovo models, the construction is quite sound – the sturdy plastic emits no audible squeak nor shows any extra flex.

Apple Macbook Air

Ever since news about the Macbook Air broke (and in typical Apple style left the world open-mouthed) we at Tech2.0 had been waiting eagerly to get our hands on it. Well, the wait is now over, so without further ado or pontification let’s head straight to the heart of the matter – does the slim-and-sexy Macbook Air deliver?

Despite seeing images and videos of the Macbook Air, nothing could have prepared me for the “OMG THAT IS SLIM!!!” reaction I had when I first beheld the laptop. It is that thin. Measuring an incredible 14.2 x 10.5 x 1.9, this is truly the world’s slimmest laptop and will remain so till the competition gets its act together.

Considering how thin it is, quite a few users might have concerns about its sturdiness. Well these doubts can be easily laid to rest. The Macbook Air is constructed on a strong aluminum shell, which has a sober light silver finish. This is a revolutionary clean design and breaks new ground for high performance slim laptops.

However, the slimness has its drawbacks. The usual arrays of ports and the standard optical drive that are ubiquitous on normal laptops are completely absent here. Instead there's just a single USB slot – for any external connectivity one will have to use a variety of external connections that increase the number of items one has to carry. We'll cover this in greater detail later in the article.

Moving on to its features, the LCD panel on the Macbook Air is a 13.3 inch TFT LED panel with a native resolution of 1280 x 800. This glossy screen offers excellent levels of brightness and color/contrast. Thanks to the excellent anti-aliasing available on OSX, text and graphics were very crisp and rich. Watching movies was a real delight. The only hitch was the viewing angle – even a little tilt away from center led to a dramatic loss in clarity. The gloss of the screen did not pose a problem.

Toshiba Satellite M200

The laptop market today has become hyper-competitive, with increased performance levels available at prices unimaginable just a few years ago. This has lead to top-level manufacturers like Dell and Acer offering budget solutions that offer great VFM. In line with this, Toshiba recently updated its Satellite series to be able to exploit this growing market.

One of the models it's introduced is the Satellite M200. How does it fare against the competition? Let’s find out.

One of the things I have always admired about Toshiba’s laptops has been its styling and good quality finish. The M200 adheres to this quite admirably. Its body and frame sports a nice high-gloss black finish on its lid and the area directly below the mouse-pointer area. This same finish extends to the area directly above the keyboard too. However the laptop is not glossy all over. The area around the LCD panel has a black matte finish, while the keyboard and immediate surroundings are shades of white and a dull aluminum finish.

Physically this is a hefty laptop. It has a thick frame and when you combine its weight of 2.5kg... well, it’s not going to be winning any awards for breaking new ground in industrial design. Jokes aside, the laptop feels quite sturdy and when you factor in the reinforced LCD panel, one can reasonably expect it to last a while without wearing out. There were no audible creaks either from the hinges or the keyboard area. The only drawback is the glossy lid, which is a fingerprint magnet and looks shabby if not cleaned regularly.

The keyboard of the M200 is one of the best I've used in a while. It’s nice and wide, offers excellent response while typing. The softly textured keys make working long hours a pleasure. The touchpad is a bit small, but well-recessed mouse keys and good positioning make working with it a non-issue.

The LCD panel is a glossy 14.1 inch widescreen with a native resolution of 1280x800. It offers very good levels of brightness with average levels of contrast and color. Though at first the glossy screen was an irritant, given sufficient time and adjustment of the screen’s brightness it was very usable.

Connectivity-wise the M200 is decently represented. It has 4 USB 2.0 ports, one FireWire 400 port, one Type II PC card slot, VGA connector, S-Video slot , multifunctional 5-in1 card reader and a 1.3 MP webcam.

The Brief History of Apple Laptops

The release of the Apple laptop was the product that helped put Apple back on top in the computing world. For years, Apple had been appreciated by graphic designers, artists, and other visually minded people who appreciated the plethora of graphics programs on Apple's computers. And for this reason, Apple became entrenched in a niche market and struggled gain footing as a serious competitor in the computing world.

But with the launch of the Apple laptop, Apple was able to finally break free from this restrictive mold. Apple was able to separate itself from the crowd with a visually appealing product that catered to the customer's needs and wants - a powerful computing machine that was easy to use.

Apple laptops, such as the iBook and PowerBook models, were visually unique also. They stood apart from other laptop designs with their trademark sleek white or shimmering silver color and a curvy design that lacked edges. These laptops appealed to both the upper echelon as well as the common dweller.

The Apple laptop also incorporated accessibility into its design. This Apple product was different in that it could be used with PC and Windows products, which is one of the attributes that helped propel Apple beyond its constrictive refines. Apple users were no longer restricted. Another plus is that the Apple laptop tended to outperform comparable laptop PCs.

The novel design of Apple laptop even included a built in trackball which served to set it even further apart from its competition. No other laptop manufacturers included such a feature that was integrated as well. With the Apple laptop, the trackball was placed in front of the keyboard making it easier to use and much more comfortable will.

Apple even managed to package its laptop into a smaller space than other PC manufacturers. The Apple laptop was less than 2.5 inches thick and only covered an area slightly larger than a letter-size sheet of paper. And in addition to that, it weighed in at only 6.8 pounds, while its PC counterparts averaged well over 8 pounds and lacked many of the features found in even the cheapest desktop system, such as hard drives and mice.

By incorporating features that other laptop PCs did not include, the Apple laptop managed to gain footing in the IT world and propel itself to the top of the ranks. And by remaining on the cutting edge of technology, Apple shows no signs of slipping yet.

Laptop Buyer's Guide (Battery)

An important factor to consider is how much battery life you'll need on your laptop. No matter how much battery you have, using your built in DVD drive a lot and having a 15" TFT screen will drain it faster. Battery technology--just like any technology--is improving all the time. Yesterday's laptops featured Ni-Cad (Nickel-Cadmium) batteries that hurt the environment, didn't offer much up-time (comparatively), and had the annoying habit of remembering how long you have used them and refusing to work any longer the next time. Then there were NiMH (Nickel-Metal-Hydride) batteries. They offered longer life, better efficiency, and no memory problems. The current generation of laptops uses Lithium Ion batteries. These batteries are a gain in efficiency over NiMH batteries. Future batteries may be Lithium Metal batteries. They offer an extremely low discharge rate (long shelf life when charged) and efficiency improvements over Lithium Ion batteries, but movement towards new battery technology has slowed recently.

Some laptops claim up to five hours worth of up-time on one battery--take this figure with a grain of salt. That's probably how long the battery would last if you put on the blank-screen screen saver and didn't touch it for five hours. Expect more in the range of two or three hours per battery under continual use. If you plan to be on flights, trains, or buses for ten hours at a time, buy some extra batteries and use this feature, make sure you have a power plug handy, or consider buying a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) instead. Most PDAs typically tout a 9 hour or longer battery life. At one point, Micron offered a battery plate that fit on the bottom of their laptops, adding size and a few pounds, but got you about 10 hours of battery life. If that's what you need, check around for interesting battery setups. Several manufacturers also offer laptops with expansion slots that will accept a variety of peripherals, including a second battery. The second battery can double your battery life, and make sure you get a battery charger to go with it so that you can charge both batteries at the same time (one in the laptop, one in the charger).

If you need it, get 3 or 4 extra batteries and keep them fully charged for those long flights. You may face additional scrutiny at the security check-points, though, and keep in mind that the batteries can cost up to and over US$200 apiece.

If you're having problems with a laptop crashing and shutting down randomly after using it for several months, chances are that the battery is what is causing the problem- even if it's plugged in. Laptops expect to be able to charge the battery, and if the battery is charging in a faulty manner, your laptop may decide to start shutting itself off. Hopefully, most newer designs take care of this type of problem, but we've seen it many times with older models.

Recommendations Make sure you get a Lithium Ion battery. NiMH or, even worse, Ni-Cad are old technologies that are best forgotten.

Cleaning a Laptop LCD Screen

by Darren Blythe

One of the most common things I get asked is how to safely clean a laptop screen. By far the best way is to use a microfibre cloth. These can be found cheaply on Ebay or in the shops and do an excellent job. Here's how they work....

Microfibre cloths do an excellent job of picking up dust and removing smudges. They will even remove oily fingerprints from a surface without spreading it around and without any additional cleaners. They are environmentally & economically friendly by reducing money spent on cleaners, paper towels and trash that has been generated.

Please note: Treat any of the following screen types as you would an expensive camera lens, using high quality cleaning materials and tested techniques.

  • LCD screens are not glass! The LCD surface is made of a soft film that is vulnerable to scratches, damage by sharp articles and/or improper cleaners.
  • Most cathode ray tube (CRT) type monitors have anti-glare coatings to help reduce reflections; scratches and/or harsh cleaners can damage this surface.
  • Many large screen and projection type TV's have a screen that is made of a plastic or acrylic type material. These type screens require special attention to clean properly and safely.
  • Plasma screens are made of glass substrate but are usually coated for glare reduction.
  • Glare reduction add-on screens are coated for reduced reflection.
  • Most HDTV's have surface coatings for glare reduction.
As you can see, most screens have an anti-glare coating that can be permanently scratched, so make sure your cleaning cloths do not contain any sand or grit that could damage the screen surface.

The following instructions are good, general and safe methods for keeping your screen clean without causing surface damage. Use your Microfibre screen cloths and do not apply excessive pressure.

The most common type of screen cleaning is dust on the surface of the screen. Use the microfibre screen cloth without any type of additional cleaner for everyday type screen dusting.

For more stubborn dirt, smudges and/or fingerprint removal, use the orange microfibre screen cloth sprayed with water or moistened under the tap.

Turn off your monitor or screen. This is a safety issue; also, it is easier to see the screen surface against the dark background.

  1. Remove any larger dirt particles: Using the microfibre cloth, gently brush away any larger dirt particles. Also, wipe the edges, lifting the dust into the cloth as you go.
  2. Use the microfibre screen cloth to clean the surface. Applying light pressure, wipe the screen being careful not to overwork any area. If you have areas of the screen that do not come clean, go on to the next step.
  3. For dirt, stains or streaking that is dried onto the screen surface; moisten the cloth under the tap. It may be necessary on larger screens to work one-half or third of the screen at a time. Make sure the cloth is damp NOT wet as excess moisture could seep into the edges of the screen causing problems. Wipe the screen with the dampened cloth.
  4. Applying light pressure, work quickly to moisten the screen. You want to be able to come back to the same area before it dries. Reposition the cloth in your hand finding a drier section of cloth and continue wiping the screen to the point of most friction caused by the nearly dry screen. At this point reposition the cloth one more time, and lightly wipe to finish polish. Finally, clean the edges and corners, lifting any dust or debris into the cloth.
  5. Check the surface for any streaking or missed areas, if so; repeat the last two steps as necessary
  1. Check cloth(s) to see if cleaning is needed: if so, see next section; if not, allow to dry then store clean for next usage.
Avoid using Kleenex, paper towels, or other coarse shop towels. These materials may contain abrasives that can scratch plastic, acrylic, polycarbonate surfaces or surface coatings. Also these fabrics also can be very dusty or linty. Do not clean your screen with strong cleaners, polishes or chemically treated cloths.

Avoid these cleaning chemicals: ketone type material (Acetone), alkalis, acids, phosphates, chlorides or caustics, as they can cause damage to coatings or LCD polarizers.

We also do not recommend any cleaner that claims to leave behind any type of surface protective coating or protective layer. Most computer monitors have an anti-glare coating on the screen surface. Anything that leaves a coating to this surface is going to affect the effectiveness of that anti-glare coating. We also have noted some hard to remove smudging from these types of cleaning products.

Microfibre Cloth Cleaning Tips: One of the advantages of microfibre cloths is that they can be washed and reused repeatedly. Note: As with other new materials, some of the dyes used to color these materials can bleed when washed.

  • For non-critical cleaning, you can wash with normal wash machine load, but avoid washing with anything that might be linty. Do not use bleach or fabric softeners in the washer or dryer. Air-drying is good, but they also can be safely dried at low heat in the clothes dryer.
  • For more critical cleaning, wash the cloths separately, either by hand or in a wash machine, in warm water, adding a small amount of detergent. Do not use any bleach or fabric softener and rinse at least one extra time. Air dry or use a clothes dryer on low heat, again no fabric softener
To sanitize; microfibre cloths may be boiled for 5-10 minutes to eliminate any bacteria that may form in the fibers.

How do I clean ink from a screen surface? One method, which has worked well for some persons, is to saturate a clean cloth with isopropyl rubbing alcohol. With gentle wiping, this normally will remove most inks from a screen. *

Other items worth noting:

  • Do not rub the surface of the screen with ball-point-pen or screwdriver etc.
  • Do not place rubber, vinyl products or cellophane tape on your screen.
  • Avoid touching the screen with fingers. (oily fingerprints will result)
  • Exposing the screen to direct sunlight for a long period of time or to other heat sources may cause damage to any screen.
  • Kids have various games and learning devices in which they use a pen-like device to write on a screen. Explain to them the difference in their screen and your plasma TV screen, or new LCD monitor.

* Before using any liquid cleaners on your screen, consult your manual or manufacturers recommended cleaning procedures.
